Digitization has hit the
Marketing Communication world like storm. Since the start of the 21st
century it has been proving its worth in one way or the other. Let me start by
saying that Digitized Marcom gained prominence with the start of the website
hosting on the net.
Websites back then were
needed to be not only robust and relevant in look & feel but also were
supposed to be very high on marketability concepts as well.
This means that websites
were and still are not just supposed to look good but also are supposed to
positively impact the viewers from the marketing viewpoint.
The story then went on to a
totally new level with the emergence of the Social Networking Sites (SNS) which
allowed for greater connectivity and catering to sharing of more data in a much
more convenient a manner.
Social media website
especially Facebook and Orkut (once upon a time) redefined the concept of chatting
and sharing photos, videos, music etc and in their own small ways started to truly
symbolize the identity & nature of
the legendary Internet 2.0 which today has graduated to the mighty Internet 3.0
which, one day, would surely turn into the mammoth Internet 4.0.
They (along with Video
hosting websites like Youtube) also began to attract more and more people to the
Internet in droves which then kick-started the concept of Digital media based
entertainment experience that carries on evolving with the adoption of newer technologies.
All these development
created more scope for Advertising and Marketing Communication activities over
the Internet or shall we say the Digital Domain or even the Electronic Highway.
A new field called Digital
Marketing, and now Internet Marketing, emerged to address the newness that had
been created and that was flourishing over the Digital media.
Digital Marketing has been
around for 12 years now and its concepts can easily be used to effectively carry
out various Marketing Communication campaigns and activities over the Internet.
But the newness and dynamism
on the Electronic Highway keeps getting redefined and still remain largely unheeded.
I am sure this will maintain
the various exciting and lucrative challenges
for the Digital Marketing professionals at present and in future.
